The main difference between a power lift chair and an ordinary recliner, is its purpose as a mobility enabler. A lift chair moves into different positions to allow the user to stand up, sit down or recline with ease. They can also facilitate side transfers. You will find most lift chairs can be categorized as one of the following:

  • Three-Position
  • Infinite Position
  • Zero Gravity
  • Vertical Lift

A three-position lift chair can be maneuvered into a sitting, reclining and lift position. Our Jupiter One Motor Lift Chair and Atlas Lift Chair are three-position chairs. The footrest and back move together.

Infinite Position

An infinite position lift chair can be moved into any number of positions as the footrest and back move independently of one another. You can elevate the footrest without reclining or recline without lifting the footrest all the way. This allows you to find a position that is most comfortable for you.

Zero Gravity

Zero gravity lift chairs are infinite position lift chairs that allow for tilting of the seat along with reclining. They’re considered zero gravity because the user can position themselves in a way that distributes their weight equally. This equal weight distribution alleviates pressure on the joints, neck and back providing the most comfortable positioning possible.

Zero gravity lift chairs are the ideal for those who spend a lot of time sitting/sleeping in their chair. Our Triton and Europa Models are both zero gravity lift chairs.

Vertical Lift

While most lift chairs lift and tilt forward to help the user exit and enter the chair, a vertical lift chair elevates the seat vertically without tilting forward. This feature can be beneficial to users who require transfer in and out of the chair using a sliding board transfer form a wheelchair, commode, or bed as it allows you to adjust the height of the seat. A vertical lift chair is also beneficial to caregivers who have patients unable to stand or sit unaided as these chairs allow for transfers in the seated or supine positions. When the chair is reclined with the footrest elevated the arms and shoulder wings can be removed so the user can be slid across onto or off the chair.

Some lift chairs have additional features that enhance the experience of owning a power reclining chair. These can include heat and massage, cup holders, trays, lounger style footrests and more. Other features help ease the use of owning a lift chair such as removable seat backs and battery back-up.

At Factory Direct Medical all our Planet Lift Chairs feature removable seat backs, lounger style footrests and battery back-up.

Size and Style

Lift chairs come in a wide variety of colours, shapes, upholstery types and appearances to help fit in with any decor. You can also find a range of sizes to help fit your individual needs.

Sizing that varies includes back height, seat height and seat depth all of which can impact the users overall comfort. The back needs to be high enough to support the head and the seat height tall enough so that when reclined the footrest can support the entire leg. Overall sizing can also vary and it’s important to ensure the chair will fit into the designated space in your home.

Upholstery options in the Planet Lift Chair line include Top Grain leather, Chenille and a Cotton Blend that offers incontinence protection. Each model offers different colours to help match the interior of your home.

Finding a Lift Chair with the colour and style that fits with your décor will ensure you’re satisfied with your purchase for many years to come.
