Description

The Rubber Threshold Ramp is a rubber wheelchair ramp made of recycled vehicle tires that is designed to provide a smooth entry through doorways with raised thresholds.

Weighing between 7 lbs and 68 lbs, depending on the size, the rubber threshold wheelchair ramp is not generally considered a portable ramp since it is usually purchased for a specific doorway and won't likely work with other doorways.

The recycled rubber threshold ramp has almost no limitation on weight capacity and is suitable for all wheelchairs and scooter.

Because a raised threshold in a doorway usually affect both inside and outside the doorway it may be necessary to purchase two of these ramps to accommodate both sides of the door threshold.

Features
  • The load capacity for this rubber threshold ramp is virtually unlimited
  • Moulded slip resistant surface for safe use
  • Easy to set up for use
  • Available in 4 sizes for thresholds from 1 1/8" to 2 1/2" high
  • Constructed or 100% recycled rubber
  • Ramp width varies between 42" and 60"
  • Full width solid surface suitable for all types of wheelchairs and scooters

Ramp Safety Wheelchair Ramp Slope
  • Permanently installed wheelchair ramps must be at least 1' long for every 1" of rise to meet most building codes.
  • Portable wheelchair ramps do not have to abide by building codes but wheelchair ramp manufacturers usually recommend that you should have at least 1' of ramp for every 2" of rise.
  • Another consideration when buying wheelchair ramps is the type of equipment that will be used on the ramps. Wheelchairs and scooters have limits on how steep of an incline can be traversed set by the manufacturers and these limits should be kept in mind.
  • The above three points refer to slopes when there is a user in the equipment when it is traversing a ramp. When using a portable wheelchair ramp to load a wheelchair or scooter, without a passenger, into a vehicle can be as steep as can be safely managed by the person doing the loading.
Portable Wheelchair Ramp Set-up

In order to use a portable wheelchair ramp safely it is important that it be set up properly for use.

The biggest issue with portable wheelchair ramp safety is slipping during use. If the lower level of the ramp is placed on a slippery surface such as ice or snow there is a danger of the ramp slipping during use. when the bottom of the ramp slips the top of the ramp will often slip off the upper surface causing the ramp, user and mobility device to fall to the ground. This situation is especially common when using a ramp to enter or exit a vehicle where the roadway or parking lot may not be cleared of ice and snow well enough or not very level.

The solution to portable wheelchair ramp slippage is to secure the ramp to the upper level. When the ramp is usually used in the same location such as a vehicle or home location the simplest solution is to have two pins that can be inserted through the ramp and into holes in the step, deck, porch or vehicle.

Instructions
  1. Before starting to install the Rubber Threshold Ramp make sure all surfaces are clean, dry and free from any holes or cracks deeper than ½" deep and all surfaces are over 5°C.
  2. Measure the door threshold, or other vertical rise, for height. In the event there is a variance in the height of the rise use the lowest rise as your measurement.
  3. Use the supplied cutting template to to determine the required height and cut the rap with a reciprocal saw or band saw using a straight edge as a guide. Warning: do not use any type of powered circular saw to cut the rubber threshold ramp. Unexpected binding, grabbing or pinching by the ramp material can cause the blade to bind resulting in serious injury.
  4. Place the ramp in the desired location and and mark any mouldings or door jambs that need to be accommodated. trim or notch the ramp as needed.
  5. If the ramp vertical rise is uneven you can turn the ramp over and use a variable speed planer to trim the bottom of the ramp 1/16" at a time. Slower speeds work better, too high a speed can cause smoking.
  6. Dry fit the ramp before applying the adhesive and use masking tape to mask off the edges of the ramp. This will aid in adhesive clean up afterwards.
  7. Recommended Adhesives: Silicones Unlimited SU5007 or Dow Corning 995 Silicone Adhesive for all applications except asphalt. For asphalt applications use silicones Unlimited 6000 adhesive. Using the wrong adhesive will likely cause adhesion failure and void any implied or expressed warranties.
  8. Using a standard adhesive trowel apply adhesive evenly across the bottom of the rubber threshold ramp making sure the edges of the ramp has ample adhesive.
  9. After ramp is secure and adhesive is set the excess adhesive and masking tape can be cut away. Light foot traffic is permitted after 1 hour but the adhesive will take 24 hours to set fully.
